Why.

I own an adorable 550 square foot apartment in Vancouver, Canada. I would like to renovate my apartment. My goals are to make the best use of the little space and to have a fresh and creative element of design.

Closet Offices

An idea I have is to convert my current laundry closet to a home office.  The laundry is wasted space right as the machines sit right in middle with about 1.5 - 2 feet on 3 sides.  I know - totally awkward + stupid.

The laundry closet is immediately to the left in a small hallway when you walk in.  I would like to take out laundry machines completely and put somewhere else.  I want to completely open up 2/3rds of this space to be used for a desk, rolling chair and small lamp.  After looking at the below photos, I realized I want to keep the space above the desk clear.  I think it will give the illusion as being more spacious.  As this is an area that will be visible from Kitchen/Dining area.  I think eliminating the shelves will remove a claustrophobic impression.

The remaining third of this space will be built in cabinets with shelves and about 2-3 drawers with no lip.  These drawers will be at about waste height.  They will house my printer, scanner, modem and any other computer electrical.  They will be housed on drawers for easy pull out access.  I will have holes near the back of drawers that will go up to the desk through a hole at the back for plugging into my computer as need be.

I can also store paper products ect on these shelves.  I would also like to have one shelf dedicated to utility things - tool box, hammer, nails, light bulbs, ect.  At my store we affectionately call this our "Man Drawer".

The top shelves can be used for linens.  Sheets + Towels.

At the very top of this office area, below the ceiling, I would like to have one long horizontal door that opens/lifts upwards.  This will be high - I am tall so things high are a non-issue for me.  Here I can store my snowboard and snowboard gear our of the way - safe, out of sight and neat.

I like the use of wall paper, and the streamline of this office.  But this is far too small for me.  I get claustrophobic anxiety looking at it.  I need at least another foot - maybe, two if I can manage the space.

I really like the open shelves in this closet office.  It feels more spacious.  I also love the wall paper idea.  What a great place to use wall paper.

I want to re-create the idea of a mirror like this home office.  I also love the idea of the thin shelves above.  Perhaps, I can do something like this in the shelves next to my office.  I am extremely disorganized when it comes to bills!!  It is terrifying.  I would like to believe that if I put in nice shelves that would fit a piece of 8x10 paper that I could organize everything better.  Each shelf could be labelled with cute labels - Mortgage, Visa, Chequing, Line of Credit, Car, Insurance, Hydro, Telus, Strata, T4's, MSP, Clothing, Renovations, ect.

I want to use this idea of chalk board in frame over my electrical panel at the front door.  It will be good for reminders as I leave the house.  I also like the little drawers + shelves on this desk.

I really like the use of tile, small lamp + flowers in this office.

I would like to wall paper the back of this office area with a matching wall paper that will be used in my itsy bitsy front entry + perhaps somewhere else.  I also want to place a mirror here.  Not to stare at myself but to create the idea of space.
